Social-Emotional Learning

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports - PBIS

We are a learning community dedicated to teaching positive school-wide behavior expectations. Our goal is to create a positive school culture and learning environment in which positive behaviors are explicitly taught and reinforced in order to achieve academic and social success for all students.  We teach and expect students to be Ready, Responsible, and Respectful. We are committed to encouraging and strengthening student positive behaviors and responding in a consistent manner to misbehaviors.

Character Education

We use Coach John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success to teach positive character traits. We do this through class discussions, writing prompts, and read alouds.  We encourage students to embody these character traits by giving out "Best on the Beach" awards and recognizing students at Flag Deck.

Growth Mindset

Having a growth mindset is believing that brains and talent are just a starting point and can be developed with hard work and dedication. Conversely, having a fixed mindset is believing that intelligence and talent are fixed traits that we do not have control over. As we set the tone for the school year, teachers and students are having powerful conversations about what it means to have a growth mindset and doing goal-setting activities that will promote a growth mindset throughout the year.

There is an abundance of resources (TED talks, books, research) on the topic of growth mindset. Parents may be interested in the Big Life Journal for Kids.

Second Step Curriculum

Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. The curriculum teaches social-emotional skills children need to thrive both in the classroom and in life. Students participate in lessons, activities and discussions that teach them techniques to: gain confidence, set goals, make better decisions, collaborate with others in work and play, and navigate the world more effectively.
